A ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel appears to be holding following one of the worst days in violence in the Gaza Strip since the 2014 Gaza war.
Political bureau member of Hamas Khalil al-Hayya said on Wednesday that armed groups in the Gaza Strip had agreed to a deal with Israel following a night of air attacks targeting several Hamas and Islamic Jihad positions in the coastal enclave.
Al-Hayya said the group was committed to a truce as long as Israel was.
"A number of mediators intervened in the past hours, and an agreement was reached to return to a ceasefire in Gaza", Hayya said in a statement.
The Israeli army said it struck 60 targets belonging to Palestinian resistance groups in response to alleged "barrage of projectiles" fired from Gaza into southern Israel on Tuesday.
The firing of rockets and mortar rounds came as Islamic Jihad vowed to avenge a deadly attack against its members last week.
Since March 30, at least 121 unarmed Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in protests near the Israeli apartheid fence separating Gaza and territories occupied in 1948. Palestinians are demanding their right to return to the homes and land their families were expelled from during the establishment of the Israeli entity in 1948.
Gaza - a territory of more than two million people - has been under a devastating Israeli-imposed blockade for the past 12 years, which has severely restricted the movement of Palestinians in and out of the territory.

Minister of Defense Avigdor Lieberman has warned that Israeli aggression in Gaza while continue so long as ‘the score remains unsettled,’ according to a Sunday interview with Ynet.
Lieberman’s warning was issued in response to an explosion along the Israel-Gaza border that wounded 4 IOF soldiers, two of which were considered serious and rushed to the ICU at the Soroka Medical Center in Be’er Sheva.
‘It will take two days, a week, or two weeks. We’ll eliminate anyone behind the attack’s execution,’ Lieberman warned.
In retaliation, PNN further reports, Israel launched a series of 6 airstrikes against Hamas targets late Saturday evening, including an outpost close to the sight of the original explosion and a tunnel in the Zaytun neighbourhood.
The situation continued to escalate when 2 retaliatory rockets were fired towards Israel from the Gaza Strip, prompting Israeli forces to conduct a second air raid.
The second series of attacks raised the total number that evening to 18, according to Liebermann, as well as Palestinian news sources.
Lieberman lauded the attack as ‘perhaps the most significant and widespread strike we carried out since Operation Protective Edge.’
Any incident emanating from the Gaza Strip would be the responsibility of Hamas, that has ruled Gaza since disputed elections in 2007, said Lieberman, even if they were not conducted by Hamas or its military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades.
‘Hamas is the ruler, and we consider Hamas to be responsible for everything that is done in the Gaza Strip and from the Gaza Strip,’ said Liberman.
Previous airstrikes against Hamas targets in Gaza have been in response to rocket launches conducted by the al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of Islamic Jihad organization in Palestine, as well as other members of the Popular Resistance Committee.
In January, Israeli forces struck multiple Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip after the al-Quds Brigade launched a series of mortars into Israeli territory.

Responding to statement by U.S. Ambassador David Friedman, the official Palestinian Presidency spokesperson, Nabil Abu Rodeina, said Tuesday that the ongoing illegal Israeli occupation of Palestine is the root cause of all violence in the region, and denounced the American stances that destroy all chances of real peace.
Abu Rodeina stated that Israel’s insistence on keeping its illegal occupation, violations and apartheid colonialist policies, are the root cause of all violence in the entire region.
He added that the only way to end the conflict and achieve peace in the region is to end the ongoing illegal Israeli occupation of Palestine, by implementing all related United Nations and Security Council resolutions that call for ending this and establishing an independent Palestinian state.
His statements came in response to the American Ambassador to Israel David M. Friedman, who accused the Palestinian leadership of praising attacks against Israel, including the latest stabbing Itamar illegal Israeli colony, in the occupied West Bank.
Abu Rodeina said that, instead of trying to create a positive atmosphere that could enable the resumption of real peace talks, Friedman is seeking further tension, and is attempting to bring more violence to the region.
“Such statements are unbecoming of an Ambassador; they are complete flawed and aim at creating more tension,” he said, “The Palestinian leadership supports nonviolent resistance against the Israeli occupation, and never condones violence of any type. Friedman’s statements only lead to more harm and violence to the region.”
The Palestinian official also stated that real and comprehensive peace requires the full Israeli withdrawal from the occupied territories, the establishment of a viable, contagious Palestinian State, with East Jerusalem as its capital, by implementing all related international resolutions.
