Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was rushed off the stage, on Wednesday evening, at an election campaign event, Israel’s Haaretz reported.
Emergency sirens sounded in several communities, when alleged rocket fire from Gaza was claimed, by the army, to have been intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system.
Netanyahu and his wife were escorted to a shelter near the event in Ashkelon, southern Israel.
The prime minister later returned to the stage and continued his address, and referred to the November assassination of senior Islamic Jihad commander, Baha’ Abu al-‘Ata, in the Gaza Strip.
“He who fired [rockets] last time isn’t with us anymore,” Netanyahu said. “And he who fired now, better start packing his belongings,” he continued, seemingly implying that whoever is behind the rocket fire this time will be targeted and retaliated against in a similar way.
“This isn’t an attack on me or on Ashkelon, it’s not that. These are recurring attacks on our communities, and they think that we won’t hurt them or that we’ll break down,” he added.
Videos of the event were live streamed on local newspaper websites in the south, revealing the premier’s exact location.

The Israeli air force fired, on Friday at dawn, several missiles into a few areas in the besieged Gaza Strip, causing damage.
The army claimed it was retaliating to one shell reportedly fired from the coastal region.
Media sources in Gaza said the army fired at least two missiles into Asqalan site, run by the al-Qassam Brigades the armed wing of Hamas, northwest of Beit Lahia, in the northern part of the Gaza Strip.
They added that an Israeli drone fired at least one missile into a land, east of Rafah city, in the southern part of the coastal region.
Hours later, the army fired two more missiles into Palestinian lands, south of Rafah.
Furthermore, Palestinian resistance fighters fired live rounds at Israeli drones flying over several parts of the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli army claimed that a shell was fired from Gaza, on Thursday at night, and landed in an open area in one of its colonies.
The army added that it targeted infrastructure “belonging to Hamas movement in southern Gaza, and one of its military compounds in northern Gaza.”

Israeli warplanes at dawn Thursday bombed a Palestinian resistance site in the northwest of the Gaza Strip.
A reporter for the Palestinian Information Center (PIC) said that warplanes bombed al-Safinah site in the west of Gaza City with five air-to-surface missiles, leading it to burst into flames.
Local sources said that one citizen was slightly injured and some nearby homes sustained some damage in the aerial attack.
The Israeli occupation army claimed the airstrike was in response to the firing of one rocket towards Israeli areas, adding that its anti-missile batteries intercepted the projectile.

Member of Hamas’s political bureau Khalil al-Hayya has described the information about a long-term truce between the Palestinian resistance in Gaza and the Israeli occupation state as “false and unfounded.”
In an interview conducted with him by al-Aqsa satellite channel on Wednesday, Hayya expressed his belief that “talking about a long-term truce in Gaza by some people is aimed to discredit the resistance or it could be part of Netanyahu’s lies in the context of his electoral fight or to cover up other things.”
He accused some Palestinian parties and “others not from Palestine” of insisting on falsifying facts and seeking to damage the reputation of the Palestinian resistance.
“Hamas has accustomed the factions to transparency and partnership, and we do not hid any talks we conduct with all parties,” the Hamas official said, adding that if there was any proposal about a long-standing truce in Gaza, all the resistance factions would know about it.
As for the current foreign tour of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haneyya, Hayya said that the Hamas delegation discussed with the Egyptian officials their country’s role in supporting the Palestinian cause and other issues of mutual interest.
He also said that Haneyya and his accompanying delegation highlighted the need to pressure the Israelis to honor the recent understandings over Gaza, end the siege and stop using deadly force against the participants in the March of Return rallies.
He affirmed that Haneyya’s foreign tour is intended to improve Hamas’s political relations with other countries and rally support for the Palestinian people and their resistance.
