Rocket, which came after two Palestinian teens were reported killed by IDF troops earlier in the day, causes brush fire in open area of city ; two women treated for shock
A rocket fired from the Gaza Strip landed in an open area in the Israeli border community of Sderot on Friday night, causing a brush fire.
Air raid sirens sounded in three communities - Sderot, Ibim and Kibbutz Or HaNer - as the rocket was launched. Two women in Sderot were treated for shock after the rocket strike.
The IDF said it was investigating the incident, which came after two Palestinian teens were reported killed in clashes along the border fence earlier in the day.
Palestinian medical officials in Gaza named the dead as Khaled Al-Rabai, 14, and Ali Al-Ashqar, 17. Seventy protesters were wounded, 38 of them by live fire during the protests, the officials said.
The IDF said that troops guarding the border were faced with more than 6,000 demonstrators "especially violent" protests at several points along the fence.
It said the demonstrators hurled "a large amount of explosive devices, grenades and firebombs" and damaged parts of the fence.
The army also detained two Palestinians who crossed the frontier into Israel.
Protesters have staged 18 months of weekly demonstrations dubbed the "March of Return", calling for an end to a security blockade imposed on Gaza by Israel and Egypt, and for Palestinians to have the right to return to land from which their families fled or were forced to flee during Israel's founding in 1948.
Israel rejects any such return, saying that would mean an end to the Jewish state.

Israeli army war jets fired, on Wednesday evening, several missiles into a site run by the al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, in northern Gaza, causing damage.
Media sources in Gaza said the missiles caused property damage but did not lead to casualties.

On its part, the Israeli army said it was retaliating to a shell, which was reportedly fired from Gaza, and landed in an open area, causing no damage or injuries.

An Israeli fighter jet has targeted a position of the Palestinian Hamas resistance movement in the central part of the besieged Gaza Strip as the Tel Aviv regime presses ahead with its acts of aggression against the impoverished Palestinian coastal sliver.
The Israeli army said “the aircraft bombed a Hamas observation post east of Juhor ad-Dik (village) in the central Gaza Strip.”
There were no immediate reports of casualties and the extent of damage caused.
The military claimed that the strike was carried out after four rockets were fired toward the Israeli-occupied territory. Only one of the rockets reached the area, while the other three appear to have exploded within the Gaza Strip, it added.
On August 22, Israeli warplanes bombed a round of sites in the Gaza Strip belonging to the Hamas resistance movement after several rockets were fired from the coastal enclave toward the occupied lands.
The Israeli army said at the time that warning sirens were activated near the Gaza border. There were no injuries in the rocket attacks.
The Israeli military frequently bombs the Gaza Strip, with civilians being the main target of such attacks.
Israel has also launched several wars on the Palestinian coastal sliver, the last of which began in early July 2014. The military aggression, which ended on August 26, 2014, killed nearly 2,200 Palestinians. Over 11,100 others were also wounded in the war.
The Gaza Strip has been under an Israeli siege since June 2007. The blockade has caused a decline in the standards of living as well as unprecedented levels of unemployment and unrelenting poverty.
The Israeli regime denies about 1.8 million people in Gaza their basic rights, such as freedom of movement, jobs with proper wages as well as adequate healthcare and education.

Israel has launched fresh airstrikes against the Gaza Strip and a region in Lebanon near the Syrian border, using its warplanes and unmanned aerial vehicles, respectively.
Three Israeli drone attacks hit a central region of Bekaa governorate in eastern Lebanon near the border with Syria on Sunday night, allegedly targeting the positions of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.
The group, however, says the attack has failed to target its posts. An official from the military position belonging to the Palestinian group in the town of Qousaya said the three drone attacks caused only material damage.
"MK planes (drones) targeted one of our sites with three small rockets. There were no casualties, only material damage," Abu Muhammad told Lebanon's An-Nahar newspaper.
The drone attacks came one day after two Israeli drones crashed in a southern neighborhood of Beirut.
The Lebanese Resistance Movement, Hezbollah, said the first drone had fallen on a building housing Hezbollah’s media office in Beirut’s Dahieh suburb. The second drone, which appeared to have been sent by Israel to search for the first one, had crashed in an empty plot nearby after being detonated in the air, it added.
Hezbollah Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah on Sunday warned Israel against violating the Lebanese airspace, saying fighters from the movement will counter any further breaches by Israeli unmanned aerial vehicles.
Also on Sunday, Israeli fighter jets launched airstrikes on the city of Beit Lahia in the northern Gaza Strip. There is no report of casualties as of yet.

The truth is that Israel has never succeeded in preventing terrorism, ”he said, referring to Palestinian resistance operations.

With a month to go until the elections, a host of prominent politicians go on the offensive, calling the prime minister 'weak' after 2 rocket attacks and an infiltration attempt within 24 hours; 'Deterrence against Hamas hasn’t been eroded, it’s been erased,' says Gantz
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who also holds the defense portfolio, faces growing criticism over his handling of the security situation in southern Israel. A host of prominent Israeli politician went on the offensive Sunday, attacking Netanyahu after a tense weekend on the Gaza border, with just a month to go until the September 17 elections.
Palestinian militants in Gaza fired at least four rockets into the southern city of Sderot within 24 hours over the weekend, with three projectiles being intercepted by the Iron Dome defense system.
In addition, medical sources in the enclave said Sunday that three Palestinians, who according to Israeli military were trying to infiltrate the border with Israel, were killed by IDF fire and another was left seriously wounded.
Former Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman was among the first to come out against the prime minister. "He is an excellent presenter but a weak leader who lacks leadership and is incapable of making decisions in times of crisis," wrote the Yisrael Beytenu chairman on his Facebook page.
"Again, we are faced with the unbridled behavior of the prime minister, who is currently on his way to the Ukraine to film an election propaganda, while the residents of the south are being held hostage,” Liberman added.
Blue and White Chairman Benny Gantz joined in on the criticism when he visited the Israeli communities bordering the Strip on Sunday morning. “The deterrence hasn’t been eroded, it’s been erased,” said the former IDF chief.
“We will defeat Hamas militarily, we’ll bring quiet to the residents of the south, and will not allow this to spill over into the West Bank.”
Gantz’s fellow Blue and White party member and another former IDF chief of staff, Gaby Ashkenazi, said the prime minister is “only preoccupied with himself.”
"The prime minister is weak, only preoccupied with himself and just wants quiet ahead of the elections,” said Ashkenazi. “This situation has been dragging on for over a decade. It’s incomprehensible that residents have to run to bomb shelters while they’re eating dinner. It's not just a strategic issue, it's every country’s basic duty to protect its residents.”
Finally, Former Education Minister Naftali Bennett visited the scene of Saturday’s car-ramming attack in Gush Etzion in the West Bank that wounded two Israeli youths.
"We will back the prime minister in any military action that needs to be done, but we must turn the situation on its head,” said the Yamina party member. “We need to move on to a policy of persistent attacks, chasing after the terror leaders. They have to start fearing for their lives.”
