A Palestinian child was critically injured after Israeli forces shot him with a rubber-coated steel bullet near the Shu'fat refugee camp on Thursday, witnesses said.
Yahiya Sami al-Amoudi, age 10, was walking near a checkpoint by the occupied East Jerusalem refugee camp when he was shot by the bullet. He was taken to the Hadassa hospital in Ein Karem with a fractured skull, jaw and left ear, and had surgery to remove his left eye. The child's family said he was heading back home from school, when he was shot by a rubber-coated metal bullet in his eye. A spokesman for Fateh Movement in the camp, Thaer Fasfous, condemned the targeting of children with tear gas, stun grenades and rubber-coated bullets. |
Israeli police spokesperson Micky Rosenfeld claimed that there were "disturbances" in the Shufat area after locals threw stones at municipality workers.
Israeli border police used "non-lethal" weapons and a 10-year-old boy was moderately injured and taken to hospital, he added.
Palestinian kid seriously wounded by Israeli sniper
10-year-old Yahya Sami al-Amoudi, from the Shua’fat refugee camp, sustained on Thursday serious eye injuries after he was shot by an Israeli occupation sniper.
Eye-witnesses said an Israeli sniper targeted a group of Palestinian schoolchildren, on their way back home, with randomly-shot barrages of rubber bullets and tear gas canisters. The child Yahya al-Amoudi sustained critical eye injuries in the shooting.
The casualty was rushed by the Red Crescent ambulance to the Hadasah Ein Kerem hospital to be urgently treated for the inflicted wounds.
Head of the ambulance department at the Red Crescent, Amin Abu Ghazala, said the eye injuries resulted in critical brain concussions.
The child’s family said their son fell into a coma and the rubber bullet has not been taken out of his eye yet.
Spokesperson for Fatah Movement at the Shua’fat refugee camp, Thaer al-Fasfous, slammed Israeli snipers for targeting children without reason.
He said live video shots corroborate the deliberate shooting, without any prior notifications whatsoever, of some 50 Palestinian schoolchildren as they went out of a bus.
Yahya’s case is the third of its kind in a month’s time. Earlier, Israeli sniper bullets took away the eye of the 12-year-old Yahya al-Jawalani and left the nine-year-old Noureddine Osama Mohamed Ali with serious thigh strains.

IDF to use 'more humane' non-lethal ammunition
After extensive testing, military approves use of rubber bullets in the West Bank by specially authorized units to disperse riots.
The IDF will soon introduce a new means for riot dispersal. Following a series of experiments recently performed by the military, the use of non-lethal ammunition has been approved as a method to avoid escalations of violence.
An Army officer told Ynet that the rubber bullet "is considered a more humane weapon".
The military has considered using the non-lethal method in the West Bank that is already used by Israeli police, but doubts regarding its lethality prevented its use. Controversy over the issue arose after the death of 16-year-old Mohammed Sinokrot in East Jerusalem last year, whose relatives claimed he was struck by a police rubber bullet.
The tens of thousands of rubber bullets purchased by the IDF are intended for use by the Judea and Samaria Division, and will be deployed in the upcoming weeks, initially as a pilot program for border guard units. Another change in crowd control measures used by IDF is the Ruger firearm, which specially authorized units can use to fire small lead projectiles into the lower body of a central instigator.
The rubber bullets to be used by the IDF will have a diameter of 40 millimeters (about 1.5 inches). Like the Ruger, units will require special authorization to use them. The minimum distance from a demonstrator must be seven meters (about 23 feet), with a range of a few dozen meters.

The Israeli occupation forces (IOF) have sealed off the main entrances to southern Nablus, in the northern West Bank, on accounts of providing a tight security shield for Israeli settlers.
Member of the Madama village council Bahjat Ziada said the IOF have since Wednesday afternoon been blocking Palestinians access out of and into Nablus’ villages of Madama and Burin. A military checkpoint was pitched by the IOF at the main entrance to the villages allegedly to provide security for Israeli settlers passing through the area.
The IOF have also reportedly been closing the Hawara checkpoint for varying periods of time after hordes of Israeli fanatics joined marches staged in illegal settlement outposts in southern Nablus.
A few hours earlier, the Israeli occupation troops rolled into Nablus’ Burin and set up a makeshift roadblock at its crossroads, denying Palestinians entry into and exit from the area.
Dozens of Israeli extremist settlers also partook in a march on the Yitzhar bypass under the pretext that Molotov Cocktails were hurled at settler cars.
Meanwhile, eye-witnesses said a bench of Israeli vandals set up a tent and a makeshift caravan on a hill in Burin, raising concerns over Israeli intents to set the stage for the establishment of an illegal settlement outpost at the expense of Palestinians’ own and only lands.
Overnight Wednesday the IOF pitched a flying checkpoint at the entrance to Deir Sharaf village, west of Nablus, where Palestinian vehicles and passers-by were meticulously inspected, resulting in traffic congestion.

Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) burned Tuesday morning pastoral lands in Atouf town near Tubas and prevented putting fire down, local sources revealed.
The village council’s president Bashar Bani Odeh said, in a press statement, the IOF soldiers burned pastoral lands in the vicinity of one of the Israeli nearby military camps, but the flames spread to the adjacent Palestinian pastorals which immediately caught on fire, Bani Odeh said.
He added that the Palestinian civil defense were unable to approach the fire locations due to rough roads and the IOF soldiers barred the Palestinians from putting fire down using simple tools.
Bani Odeh pointed out that the spreading fires approached the housing areas after burning hundreds of dunums of Palestinian pastoral lands.
The IOF has almost turned the lands in Northern Jordan Valley into military drills zones which resulted in great damage to the farms and pastoral lands in addition to dangerous remnants of military drills.
