Israel’s transportation minister Yisrael Katz on Sunday morning threatened to launch a ground invasion into the West Bank.
“Israel will have to make decisions regarding active responses to the Palestinian incitement, with the chief instigator being Mahmoud Abbas (the Palestinian president),” Yisrael Katz said on Army Radio.
“We must win this struggle, and if need be we’ll launch Operation Defensive Shield 2 and Operation Walls of Jerusalem. We must step up measures to boost Israel’s security,” Katz threatened.
In 2002, Defensive Shield was a large-scale military offensive, the largest since the 1967 Six-Day War, that swept the West Bank and caused heavy human and material losses among the Palestinians. It culminated with a siege laid to the late Palestinian president Yasser Arafat’s Ramallah compound.
Tension has been running high in Occupied Jerusalem and the occupied Palestinian territories due to escalating anti-Arab vandalism by Israeli soldiers and settlers.
Meanwhile, the Israeli occupation police issued orders banning Palestinians from entering Jerusalem’s Old City while boosting settlers' movement.
