Israeli settlers, today, raided the archaeological site of Solomon’s Pools, to the south of the occupied West Bank city of Bethlehem, under the protection of heavily armed Israeli forces.
Palestinian security sources said that Israeli forces sealed off the area as settlers stormed the pools, where they performed Jewish rituals.
Jewish settlers have recently intensified their raids of Solomon’s Pools, a famous cultural site visited by many tourists around the world, in what Palestinians fear is a prelude to a takeover.
Visits by Israeli Jews to sites across the West Bank often cause tensions with local Palestinians, as these visits are accompanied by large armed escorts.
Located near the Palestinian village of Artas, Solomon’s Pools are three large cisterns — each more than 100 meters long — that were historically part of an ancient aqueduct system connected to Jerusalem.
Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent repaired the cisterns in the 17th century and built a fortress beside them, which still stands today. Adjacent to the Pools lie the remains of an ancient Ottoman fort, set in a beautiful grove of pine and cypress trees. The actual reservoirs were in use up until 1946.
Many Jews, however, believe that the pools are named for the Biblical Solomon.
In Jerusalem, hundreds of extremist settlers broke into Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, guarded by Israeli police, according to Director of Al-Aqsa Mosque, Omar Kiswani.
Kiswani said that some 432 settlers, including students of Talmudic yeshivas, broke into the holy mosque in groups, under heavy protection from Israeli police, and went on provocative tours through the holy site.
The settlers also performed Talmudic rituals and prayers at the holy site.
He added that Israeli authorities tightened access restrictions for Palestinians in the area, under the pretext of securing protection for the settlers.
Some right-wing Israeli activists have advocated for the destruction of the compound to make way for a Third Temple.

The soldiers also abducted several Palestinians in the West Bank.
The Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) said the soldiers shot three Palestinians with live fire, 14 with rubber-coated steel bullets, and 34 who suffered the effects of teargas inhalation.
The PRCS added that the soldiers fired dozens of gas bombs at random, causing many Palestinians, including four infants, to suffer the effects of teargas inhalation, in their homes.

The soldiers also abducted a former political prisoner, identified as Ashraf Fathi Abu Hashem, from Doura city, south of the southern West Bank city of Hebron, while crossing Jaba’ military roadblock, near Jenin, in northern West Bank.
Also in Jenin, the soldiers abducted two former political prisoners, identified as Ibrahim As’ad Baddad, and Farid Salim ‘Alawna, from their homes in Jaba’ town, south of Jenin.
The soldiers also invaded and searched homes in Azzoun town, east of the northern West Bank city of Qalqilia.
In Ramallah, in central West Bank, the soldiers abducted several Palestinians in the al-Am’ari refugee camp, after searching their homes; one of them is a former political prisoner, identified as Bara’ Badra.
Another Palestinians, who remained unidentified at the time of this report, was shot by the soldiers in the refugee camp, before the soldiers abducted him and took him to an unknown destination.

A gang of Jewish settlers on Wednesday burned hundreds of olive trees and physically assaulted olive farmers and foreign activists in Burin town, south of Nablus city in the occupied West Bank.
According to local sources, settlers from the illegal settlement of Yitzhar attacked with water pipes the family of Mohamed As’ous and foreign activists as they were collecting olives from a grove in Burin town.
Consequently, five foreign activists, including one from Israel, suffered bruises and injuries after they stood in the face of the settlers.
During the events, settlers set fire to olive trees before the flames quickly spread and burned about 450 trees.
This was the sixth such attack by settlers on olive farmers and their property in Burin since the olive season started recently.
30 different attacks were also carried out by settlers on olive farmers and groves during the current season across the West Bank.

The Israeli occupation forces (IOF) at dawn Tuesday kidnaped at least four Palestinian citizens in the West Bank.
A statement released by the Israeli army claimed that four wanted Palestinians were arrested during campaigns in the West Bank.
According to local sources, the IOF kidnaped a young man called Mahmoud Zahran from his home in Deir Abu Masha'al village, west of Ramallah.
The IOF also stormed Beit Ummar town in al-Khalil and kidnaped a citizen called Ali al-Allami two weeks after demolishing his unfinished house.
In a separate incident, some Jewish settlers physically assaulted a Palestinian woman in Khirbet Umm al-Marajem area in Duma village, south of Nablus.
Local official Ghassan Daghlas said that settlers attacked a 35-year-old woman called Zubda Musallam with pepper spray in Khirbet Umm al-Marajem, adding that she was rushed to hospital for medical assistance.

At least 300 Jewish settlers on Tuesday morning desecrated in groups the Aqsa Mosque’s courtyards under tight police protection.
According to local sources, those settlers responded to calls made by extremist Jewish groups for mass break-ins at the Mosque to mark a religious event.
More groups of settlers were seen at the Mosque’s Maghariba Gate waiting for their turn to tour the Islamic holy site.
The Aqsa Mosque is exposed to daily desecration by Jewish settlers in the morning and the afternoon except on Fridays and Saturdays.
The Israeli occupation police close al-Maghariba Gate, which is used by Jews to enter the Mosque, at 10:30 am after the settlers complete their morning tours at the holy site. Later in the afternoon, the same gate is reopened for evening tours by settlers.
During the presence of settlers inside the Mosque compound, entry restrictions are imposed on Muslim worshipers at the entrances leading to the Mosque and their IDs are seized until they leave the holy place.
