Dozens of Palestinians suffocated during clashes that erupted with Israeli forces in Beit Ummar, to the south of Hebron, after the latter stormed the town to inquire after a local youth who was shot dead by army soldiers on Friday, following an alleged car-ramming attack against Israeli soldiers.
Local Omar al-Za’aqiq, 19, was shot dead on Friday, after he allegedly rammed his car into several Israeli soldiers. The soldiers reportedly sustained various injuries.
Israeli forces predawn Saturday raided the family home of Za’aqiq, in addition to the homes of his uncles, where they interrogated the homes’ dwellers and threatened them with the demolition of their homes, leading to clashes with provoked locals. Forces fired live and rubber baton rounds, and tear gas canisters toward locals and their homes, causing dozens to suffocate due to tear gas inhalation.
Forces further took measurements of the family home of Za’aqiq, in an apparent prelude to demolish the house; Israel resorts to demolishing the family homes of Palestinians suspected of carrying out attacks against Israelis as ‘means of deterrence’; a policy that was slammed illegal as it falls under the internationally prohibited collective punishment.
“Collective punishments are prohibited under international humanitarian law in all circumstances.249 The prohibition on collective punishments applies to criminal sanctions against persons for actions for which they do not bear individual criminal responsibility, but also to “all sanctions and harassment of any sort, administrative, by police action or otherwise,” stressed the Human Rights Watch.
Spokesperson of the anti settlement popular committee in Beit Ummar, Mohammed Awad, informed WAFA that forces raided his home and interrogated his son Ahmad, 17, to inquire after him. After the son, Ahmad, told forces that his father was praying at a mosque in the area, the former raided the mosque and questioned Awad about Za’aqiq.

Israeli forces, on Saturday, chased Palestinian olive pickers off their land in the town of Burin, to the south of Nablus, according to an official.
The Director of fieldwork in Rabbis for Human Rights, Zakaria El –Sdeh, informed WAFA Palestinian News & Info Agency that forces chased Palestinians harvesting their olive crops in land situated near Israeli settlements illegally built in the area, following a settlers’ failed attempt to attack farmers.
Meanwhile, a group of Israeli settlers attacked the outskirts of the town of Madama to the south of Nablus. Settlers reportedly threatened Palestinian locals that their fate would be similar to that of the Dawabsha family and teenager Muhammad Abu Khdeir.
On July 31, settlers set fire to the Dawabsha family’s home, killing the parents and their toddler baby, Ali, and leaving 4-year-old Ahmad an orphan, whereas Abu Khdeir, aged 17, was kidnapped and burnt to death by settlers in mid 2014.
Settlements are illegal under international law as they violate Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, which prohibits the transfer of the occupying power’s civilian population into occupied territory.
Al-Haq human right organization said that, “The illegal Israeli settlement policy of transferring Israeli civilians into occupied territory is directly responsible for creating a hostile environment that puts civilians, both Israeli and Palestinian, in harm's way.”
Al-Haq stated that, “Attacks by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank against members of the Palestinian population and their property are an extensive, long-term, and worsening phenomenon.”
Al-Haq has documented a significant increase in incidents of settler violence against the Palestinian population of the West Bank since 2011.

Yesterday evening, Israeli forces kidnapped two activists from local rights group, Youth Against Settlement (YAS), in Hebron. Illegal settlers, under the protection of soldiers, closed the YAS center, the Soumud house, trapping everyone inside.
According to the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), the IOF stormed the house in the evening around 7 pm, and arrested 16-year old Ahmad al-Azzeh, accusing him of ‘having a knife’.
Israeli soldiers also abducted Issa Amro, the YAS coordinator, under the accusation of ‘disturbing the soldiers’ and ‘hiding a terrorist in his house’. Issa Amro was detained in a bathroom for more than four hours, with his hands cuffed behind his back and blindfolded. He was interrogated for long periods of time, as stated by ISM.
Whereas Issa Amro was released after more than 5 and a half hours, Ahmad al-Azzeh’s arrest was extended for another 4 days, according to the PNN. He has been detained merely on a soldier’s accusation of ‘seeing him with a knife’. “This ridiculous allegation is clearly a means to intimidate the whole group and on the long run force them to leave the area”, ISM reported on their website.
Following these detentions, settlers from the nearby illegal settlement approached the Soumud house, protesting and demanding Israeli occupation forces to close it immediately, as stated by ISM. Groups of settlers have been outside the center the whole evening, and even brought mattresses to sleep in front of the house’s door the whole night.
Everyone there, thus, was trapped inside without a possibility to leave. The whole time, Israeli soldiers present in large numbers allowed the settlers to do as they pleased, without ever intervening. A group of about 30 settlers camped outside the Soumud house, thus laying a siege to it and forcing everyone inside to spent the night there. As of Saturday, 28th November 10:30am, settlers are still outside the center, according to ISM.
The local activist group, Youth Against Settlements, has constantly been targeted by the Israeli military for their non-violent resistance to the Israeli occupation. Only a month ago, Israeli occupation forces took over the center for military use, destroying their media equipment. Settlers have repeatedly attacked the group members and wrongfully accused them of crimes.
