The Turkish Foreign Ministry strongly condemned Saturday the "disproportionate use of force" against Palestinians protesting the recent decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
The statement released by the ministry said Turkey is deeply saddened and concerned about the aggression by Israeli forces which led to the death of four Palestinians and injured hundreds more.
"We strongly condemn the use of disproportionate force by Israel," it added.
Trump announced Wednesday that the U.S. embassy in Tel Aviv will be moved to Occupied Jerusalem, garnering worldwide criticism, including from its regional allies and fellow U.N. Security Council member states.
The decision caused widespread protests across the Muslim world while demonstrations in Palestine turned violent after the Israeli occupation army started to use live ammunition and tear gas to disperse protests.
Israel occupied the east of the city in 1967 and later annexed it in moves never recognized by the international community.

"And now they are making use of terror and are bombing young people and children," he said.
Erdogan, who regards himself as a champion of the Palestinian cause and an opponent of any perceived global injustice against Muslims, described Jerusalem as the "apple of our eye" and a "red line" for Muslims.

Clashes continued throughout the weekend in Hebron, after Palestinian civil society groups called for “three days of rage” in response to Donald Trump’s widely unrecognized declaration that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. Across the West Bank and Gaza, Palestinians organized general strikes, as well as non-violent marches and demonstrations, all of which were met with military violence by Israel.
In Hebron, the violence from the Israeli army included the use of numerous rounds of tear gas, sound bombs, rubber-coated steel bullets, and live ammunition against the press and civilians, including passing families and the elderly. Soldiers also entered shops and forced businesses to close, causing further disruption to daily civilian life. Some young Palestinians resisted the Israeli army’s invasion using stones, and also by throwing the Israeli army’s own tear gas canisters back towards the soldiers. On Friday alone, between 15 and 20 Palestinian minors were arrested, including at least five that weren’t involved in the clashes, one of which was taken straight from his home. Of the five boys that ISM activists witnessed being arrested, four of them were brutally beaten by large groups of soldiers after they were subdued and handcuffed and posed no threat to the soldiers. As of 5:00 PM on Saturday, two of the boys remained hospitalized due to their injuries. In declaring that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, Donald Trump formalized the United States’ position as one in contravention of international law and the opinion of the international community. |
The international community has expressly stated – through UN Resolution 181 and others – that it doesn’t recognize any claim to sovereignty over Jerusalem by Israel, which is why most states maintain their embassies to Israel in Tel Aviv rather than Jerusalem.
Israeli army forces, Saturday night, shot a young Palestinian man in his eye with a rubber-coated steel bullet, during protests at the northern entrance of the city of al-Bireh.

Since the announcement made by US president Donald Trump recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and plans to transfer the embassy from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv, Palestinians have observed “days of rage” to express rejection of this move.

Israeli soldiers violently suppressed protests in the southern occupied West Bank city of Bethlehem for the third day in a row, on Saturday, firing tear gas and sponge-tipped bullets at locals.
Dozens of people were treated for severe tear-gas inhalation while others were injured with sponge bullets, according to Ma’an News Agency.
Clashes had broken out at around 8 a.m. near the apartheid wall at the northern end of the city, as Palestinians — mostly young men — continued protesting against Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
Confrontations continued throughout the afternoon. Locals said that, at around 4 p.m., fierce clashes had erupted in the nearby Aida refugee camp after some Palestinian youth set fire to an unmanned Israeli military watchtower in the camp.
Soldiers responded by showering the camp with gas.
The events in Aida, tonight, come a month after the Commissioner General for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Pierre Krähenbühl, delivered a speech saying that “health experts suggests residents of Bethlehem’s Aida camp are exposed to more tear gas than any other population surveyed globally.”
