Head of the Samaria Regional Council Yossi Dagan writes to finance, transportation ministers, accusing Israeli branch of fast food giant of refusing to open branches in West Bank in violation of anti-boycott law
Settler leaders are trying to stop the McDonald's from participating in a government tender for the duty free hall at Ben-Gurion International Airport over what they say is an unofficial boycott of the settlements by the fast food chain.
The head of Samaria Regional Council, Yossi Dagan, wrote a letter to the finance and transportation ministers claiming that McDonald's Israel, under the guidance of owner Omri Padan has continuously refused to open any McDonald's branches in the West Bank, and therefore effectively boycotting Israeli citizens.
"In the past few days, I have learned about McDonald's intention to compete in the Israel Airport Authority tender to open restaurants at Ben-Gurion Airport," Dagan wrote.
"As you know, McDonald's Israel, headed by Omri Padan, blatantly boycotts the citizens and territories of the State of Israel beyond the Green Line. This blatant boycott was not created casually, but officially and openly, as Omri Padan emphasized in 2013 when he vehemently refused to open a branch of the chain in (the West Bank settlement of) Ariel," he wrote.
"The law to prevent harm to the State of Israel via a boycott is clear and unequivocal (regarding) any public call for a cultural, academic or economic boycott of any person or entity solely because of a connection to the State of Israel," he said.
According to Dagan, as Padan is in violation of the anti-boycott law, he cannot participate in a government tender. Therefore, Dagan wrote, Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon is entitled to block Padan's application for airport concessions.
Padan was among the founders of the Peace Now movement, which has been advocating an end to occupation of the West Bank by Israel and the formation of an adjacent Palestinian state.
In response, McDonald’s Israel said the global McDonald’s headquarters did not approve branches in the West Bank.
Both the Transportation Ministry and the Finance Ministry said that a decision on the issue was not down to them, as they were not involved in any way in commercial tenders at the Ben Gurion airport.

Israeli soldiers, accompanying buses loaded with illegal colonists, invaded late on Thursday at night, the northern West Bank city of Nablus, heading to Joseph’s Tomb, before the army injured 25 Palestinians, during ensuing protests.
Medical sources said the soldiers shot a young man with a live round in his leg, eight pothers with rubber-coated steel bullets to several parts of his body, and caused 16 others to suffer the severe effects of teargas inhalation.
The protests took place in Amman Street, east of Nablus city, after the army jeeps and several buses invaded it.
Palestinians believe that Joseph’s Tomb is the funerary monument to Sheikh Yousef Dweikat, a local religious figure. Others believe that the tomb belongs to the Biblical patriarch Joseph, revered by Jews, Samaritans, Christians and Muslims alike.
Although the site is in the city of Nablus, which is under the Oslo Accords is defined as Zone A and therefor under Palestinian administrative and security control, the Israeli army frequently invades the area and prevents the Palestinians from reaching it; the site of Joseph’s Tomb was under Israeli control until they left in October 2000.

a new housing project in the West Bank settlement of Na'ale on January 1, 2019
Israeli officials are planning to construct hundreds of new housing units in East Jerusalem al-Quds irrespective of international outcry against the Tel Aviv regime’s land expropriation and settlement expansion policies in the occupied Palestinian territories.
Palestinian Ma’an news agency reported on Thursday that 460 settler units will be constructed in Pisgat Ze'ev settlement, while another 345 will be built in Ramot neighborhood in the northern part of East Jerusalem al-Quds.
The report added that plans for the construction of the settler units had been approved two years ago.
Israeli settlers storm agricultural land in Ramallah
Meanwhile, dozens of extremist Jewish settlers have stormed an agricultural land in the al-Tira neighborhood of the central West Bank city of Ramallah, located 10 kilometers north of Jerusalem al-Quds.
An informed source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the settlers performed prayers as well as acts deemed provocative by Palestinians, triggering clashes with local residents.
Israeli forces fired teargas canisters and stun grenades to disperse the crowd. There were no reports of casualties.
About 600,000 Israelis live in over 230 illegal settlements built since the 1967 Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories of the West Bank and East Jerusalem al-Quds.
The UN Security Council has condemned Israel’s settlement activities in the occupied territories in several resolutions.
Less than a month before US President Donald Trump took office, the United Nations Security Council in December 2016 adopted Resolution 2334, [pdf] calling on Israel to “immediately and completely cease all settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem” al-Quds.
Palestinians want the West Bank as part of a future independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem al-Quds as its capital.
The last round of Israeli-Palestinian talks collapsed in 2014. Among the major sticking points in those negotiations was Israel’s continued settlement expansion on Palestinian territories.
Trump backtracked on Washington’s support for a “two-state solution” in 2017, saying he would support any solution favored by both sides.
“Looking at two-state or one-state, I like the one that both parties like. I’m very happy with the one both parties like. I can live with either one,” the US president said during a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington on February 15, 2017.
